چکیده

The Audiovisual Aids Subcommittee of the American College of Rheumatology is pleased to present the 2008 Annual Slide Competition winners. This competition is an opportunity for health care professionals to contribute to one of the preeminent slide collections devoted to the rheumatic diseases. More than 170 entries were submitted to this year’s competition. Each submitted image was evaluated not only for a competition prize, but also for inclusion in the ACR Slide Collection on the Rheumatic Diseases. The 2008 overall competition winner was a composite of a clinical photograph and photomicrograph of atypical mycobacterial scleritis in a patient with ankylosing spondylitis who was receiving treatment with a tumor necrosis factor antagonist (Figure 1). A composite depicting the clinical, radiographic, and arthroscopic findings in a patient with primary hypertrophic osteoarthropathy was the winner in the case study category (Figure 2). In the still image category, an endoscopic photograph of gastric antral vascular ectasia (watermelon stomach) in scleroderma was the winner (Figure 3). Honorable mention was awarded to images of disabling pansclerotic morphea (submitted by Carl Gauthier, Jr., MD), “kissing and hugging” osteophytes (submitted by Eddy Disla, MD), giant cell tumor of a tendon sheath and ochronosis (submitted by Leslie Miller, MD), Kümmell’s disease (submitted by Arezou Khosroshahi, MD), disseminated coccidioidomycosis with vertebral involvement (submitted by Juan Elmer Olguin Redes, MD), systemic AL amyloidosis (submitted by Rohit Aggarwal, MD), juvenile dermatomyositis (submitted by Jay Adams), and the radiographic evaluation of possible spondylarthritis (submitted by Marc Miller, MD). The ACR will be launching its new Online Image Bank at the 2009 Annual Scientific Meeting in October 2009. This Web-based image bank will include images currently in the ACR Slide Collection (3rd edition) as well as more than 300 images not previously published. The winning slides of the 2008 competition, as well as several other noteworthy submissions, will also be included in the ACR Online Image Bank. The ACR encourages the continued submission of high-quality images to the Annual Slide Competition. The Audiovisual Aids Subcommittee is targeting particular images to enhance the ACR Slide Collection; the wish list can be found at http://www.rheumatology.org/ educ/slidecompetition/wishlist.asp. If you have highquality images that illustrate findings on the wish list or other interesting rheumatic conditions, please submit them to the 2009 Annual Slide Competition. The deadline for the 2009 competition is September 2. If you have any questions regarding the slide competition, please contact [email protected].
